My Change

As it's been in the news recently, and others have mentioned it (Pizza Hut Team Member, Arriva Driver, etc.), I thought I should throw in my thoughts on change... or lack of.

I would like to see more £5 notes. It's somewhat shocking to see how much the levels have dropped in the last few months alone.

However, I would much rather see £1 coins. For that matter, I would also quite like to see 50ps.

At the hotel, our reception staff are in charge of sorting out change. This is not normally a problem, and I can run up to reception when running low and swap some of my notes for smaller denominations. However, we recently had a new front office manager appointed... and the department has nose-dived.

An example of how she has killed the department, comes in the form of change:-

For my float a couple of weeks ago I was given £40.

£40 is a standard float, though £40 in the form of 4x£10 notes is not. When I discovered this, I went back and demanded to know how she expected me to give change to guests when all I had was £10 notes.

I was informed that we had no £1 coins, 50ps, or 20ps. If I wanted to break down some of my notes, she could give me 10ps.

...I went and lodged a formal complaint with the ops manager, then returned to bar and got abuse for about an hour from guests who didn't appreciate getting £3.50 worth of change in 10ps. Hard to blame them really.

(I later found out that one of the receptionists had been to the bank twice that day and not been asked to get change at any point)

It took 2 weeks before our new manager was yelled at by the ops manager, who I had complained to every day, and she reluctantly went and sorted out change...

From my old job I know they are phasing £5 notes out to bring in new £5 notes that are made of plastic (like the irish ones - much, much harder to forge and dont fall apart).

On the note of float, we get a £10 float, usually handed to the driver as a £10 note. I was lucky to get a bagfull of change... :-D

I've never understood why shops seem to have so little change these days... I put it down to the costs involved in maintaining it...?

Couple of good £5 related bits here; The BBC News site has been asking people for pics. of their tatty fivers, and In The News has an article about the lack of fivers which is worth a look too.

I also never realised how many different images were on £1 coins now...

I have to say that they're really good with change where I work. We always start the day with £50 in notes (which denominations depends on what's left from the night before - so we could start with 2 £20s and a £10 or all £5s but it's usually a mixture of £5s and £10s). We also get at least two bags of each coin.

Having to give out change in 10p coins reminds me of when I worked at a small Somerfield. The only change available on Sundays was the small amount not used during the week. By 1pm there was never any left and most tills were running out of £1 and 50p (there were never any £5 either).

Of course everyone wanted to pay for sub-£5 bills with £20 notes and never had anything smaller (apparently). I remember on more than one occassion having to close the till early and just tidy up for the last hour or so because the only change available to me was copper.

We always have enough change but some places might be reluctant to have much because there is % charge for every bag they get.

So when we have managers from other stores coming up to the counter asking for change then unless it is KFC or Thorntons (umm discounted chocolate..umm) we say no, because we'd actually lose money.

PHTM, how would you loose money?

If they came up with 5 £20 notes and asked if they could have £100 in pound coins, if you had enough in the safe, you would surely?

Or, do you mean you are charged an extra 20p or something per £10 in change you order from security companies? Then that would make sense!

We always get people in our rest rooms from sandwich shops asking drivers for £1 coins. Obviously we get shedloads and give them away in exchange for notes :-D

Yeah, there is an service charge for cash collection, another for deliveries and then they have commission on each bag of change.

It is quite small but ultimately Pizza Hut loses out and the other store saves on the charges.
